Case Study: The Natural Capital of Woodmeadows
A Small Budget, a Big Vision: Bringing Biodiversity to Life Through Film.
The Woodmeadow Trust, a pioneering organisation dedicated to creating wildflower meadows and inspiring ecological restoration, established the Three Hagges Woodmeadow as a living testament to its vision. This unique natural haven, a harmonious blend of woodland and grassland, is a hotspot for biodiversity.
While the Trust itself is no longer operational, its legacy of habitat creation and education lives on through Plantlife’s work at the Three Hagges Woodmeadow Nature Reserve.
“Working with Nick and his team filming “The Natural Capital of Woodmeadow” was nothing short of miraculous. Their knowledge, technical ability and “can do” attitude aligned with a wonderful ability to collaborate made the experience one I shall forever treasure along with the finished film that looks so much bigger than its budget. I can only image what they could do with a bigger budget and more time. They deserve huge recognition! Chapeau!“

The WILD Studios Approach:
The Vision
The client provided the film’s core concept, which we developed into a compelling narrative and visual style alongside the director. Our production team efficiently executed a two-day shoot, overcoming challenges such as unpredictable wildlife filming to capture stunning footage. We also conducted on-location interviews, secondary location shoots, and voiceover recording. The final product exceeded expectations, delivering a high-quality film on a remarkably tight budget.
Targeting landowners, industry professionals, government officials, and policymakers, the film aimed to demonstrate the substantial financial value of woodmeadows. The client provided a detailed script for a moderate-paced film that effectively communicated this key message.

			First Steps
Building on a successful working relationship from previous projects, we embarked on the client’s most ambitious film yet, with a tighter shoestring budget and the COVID pandemic in full swing. We discussed their ambitions, planned how to distribute the workload between their team and ours and got to work. The client provided a detailed script, and we worked closely with them to create a practical shot list. This meticulous pre-production allowed us to condense filming into a two-day schedule.
			From Brief to Build
Working with such a talented and collaborative team made the shoot incredibly efficient. Clearly defined roles and a shared vision propelled us forward. In the end we produced something far beyond what you would expect for a 3 figure budget.
With so many people involved, the editing phase presented a unique and unexpected challenge. Diverse viewpoints, while valuable, sometimes led to conflicting feedback on the desired outcome. This meant multiple rounds of feedback implementation threatening to push the project beyond budget. To navigate this, we prioritised clear and transparent communication, managing client expectations effectively. We also implemented a more streamlined feedback system, a practice we continue to use and refine today. This includes utilising live, multi-user editing documents and online platforms like Frame.io.
